Commisions

Juanita's puppets are engineered to move naturally and endure real stage use.

For over the past 10 years, Juanita has been creating commissioned work for a wide range of theatre companies across Canada. Whether you are looking for large-scale theatre productions, school masks, or small hand puppets for story time, Juanita at The Long Grass Studio and Workshop is equipped to help bring your project to life.

Puppetry is one of the oldest forms of storytelling and entertainment, and despite our highly technical, digital world, it is experiencing a powerful resurgence. Handcrafted masks and puppets created to tell stories connect deeply with the human experience, speaking to the imagination, emotion, and soul in a way few art forms can.

Juanita is prepared to help you get started. You can book an appointment to discuss your project and decide the best approach. From concept to design, design to prototype, and right through to completion, each stage is carefully considered.

Questions to ask yourself when considering a puppet for your production.

  • What is the puppet’s role? What does it need to do—and what doesn’t it need to do?

  • Who will be manipulating it on stage, and how many puppeteers are involved?

  • Durability is also key: is the puppet intended for a short performance, or a lengthy rehearsal process followed by touring?

  • Design and ease of use are essential—ergonomics are carefully considered to safeguard the puppeteer while ensuring the puppet engages and enchants the audience.

  • And finally, an important practical consideration: the budget and the timeline for your project.
